MUMBAI, India — Seven persons, including two minors, died and 51 were wounded in a fire incident at a seven-storey structure in Mumbai’s Goregaon West Friday morning, October 6. 

The fire was reported at 3.05 a.m. on Friday, 6 October, at the Jay Bhavani building near Azad Maidan in Goregaon West. Seven people perished in the incident.

“The fire was confined to the shops on the ground floor, scrap materials, and several vehicles parked in the vicinity. It could be extinguished after over three hours, around 6.45 am,” said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials.

Mumbai civic, police officers, and fire brigade officials are at the scene carrying out fire-fighting and rescue operations. 

Fifteen of the wounded have been admitted at the Cooper Hospital — the condition of two are critical — while 25 are being attended to at Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College (HBT) hospital.

The blaze was later brought under control and cooling efforts were underway.

“The cloth lying in the parking area had caught fire after, which the blaze spread to the entire area,” narrated the locals. 

Nevertheless, investigations have started to ascertain the probable cause of the fire.

“Pained to know about the loss of lives in the fire incident at Goregaon, Mumbai. We are in touch with BMC & Mumbai Police officials & all the assistance is being provided. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished them a speedy recovery to the injured ones,” Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote on his X account while expressing his pain over the fire incident.

Devendra assured the public that the government would provide all the assistance required. He also called for speedy investigations on the fire incident.

“Till now, a total of 51 people were injured in the fire, 7 died, and 39 are on treatment in HBT and Cooper Hospitals,” said Mumbai Police.

“Among the 39 injured, four have been discharged now 35 people are getting the treatment. Five people are in critical condition,” indicate police latest updates.

“The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. Due to prevailing smoke, people could not get out of the building and they moved to terrace. Seven deaths are confirmed as of now. Efforts are underway to provide relief to affected families,” said Goregaon MLA Vidya Thakur.
